Job Description – Fire Chief   

I. Scope:

This standard shall apply to the Fire Chief of the Vegreville Fire Department.

 

II. Position Summary:

 

The Manager of the Fire Department.

 

III. Job Description:   

 

The Fire Chief shall:

A.   Report to the Town Manager.

B.    Supervise, regulate and manage the department.  The Fire Chief shall control all department activities.

C.   Prescribe the specifications and manner of wear of uniforms and protective clothing and equipment.

D.   Reorganize any part of the department when in his judgment, such reorganization would best serve the department.

E.    Establish rules, regulations and procedures as necessary to ensure department efficiency and effectiveness.

F.    Enforce the department’s rules, regulations and procedures.

G.   Reprimand, preferring written charges, and suspending or dismissing members when conditions so warrant.

H.   Prepare and submit the department’s annual budget recommendations to the Town of Vegreville.

I.       Monitor the expenditures of funds allocated to the department.

J.      Regulate fire department personnel training and development.

K.   Develop a command structure and take command of fire and rescue operations as required.

L.    Recruit new members as required.

M.  Set standards for personnel and operations.

N.   Represent the fire department in the development and renewal of mutual aid contracts.

O.   Investigate the cause of all fires within the jurisdiction of the department.

 


IV. Qualifications:

 

A.   Minimum of NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Professional Qualifications Level One Certified.

B.    Minimum of fifteen years of fire service experience with increasing levels of responsibility.

C.   A combination of education and experience may be considered.
