WHMIS

 

I. Scope:

 

This standard shall apply to the conduct of the departments’ Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).  It was created to ensure that all members are fully aware of the hazards present in their workplace.

 

II. General:

 

WHMIS is a Canada wide system developed to make it easier for workers to find out about materials in their workplace that could injure them or be bad for their health.

 

III. Responsibilities:

 

A.   The department is required to provide training on:

                   1.  How to use WHMIS labels and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

                   2.  Procedures for safe use, storage, handling and disposal of the controlled products on the site.

                   3.  Procedures to follow in the event of an emergency involving the controlled products.

                   4.  Special colour, number or letter codes to identify pumps, pipes and vessels containing controlled products on site.

B.    Each member has a responsibility to:

                   1.  Learn how to use WHMIS and MSDS.

                   2.  Accept and review information on controlled products at the site.

                   3.  Follow recommended procedures to protect self and others.

                   4.  Inform the Fire Chief of hazards and damaged or missing labels.

C.   Product suppliers must:

                   1.  Provide labels and hazard information on the MSDS.

                   2.  Ensure labels and information are available

 

IV. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS):

 

A.   The Fire Chief will request a MSDS from the supplier if the material is controlled under WHMIS.

B.    Department members will review all MSDS for department materials annually.

 

V. Information:

 

A.   The Department will maintain a WHMIS / MSDS binder in the station that is available to anyone who enters the station.

B.    The WHMIS / MSDS binder will provide information on:

1.     MSDS on controlled products in the Fire Hall

2.     WHMIS hazard marking system, and

3.     WHMIS legislation.

          C. If any new WHMIS controlled product is stored at the station, the Fire Services Coordinator must be made aware so that the MSDS binder can be updated.
